Gov. Wes Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott have become political stars in Maryland.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has become a star politician within the Democratic Party, with some seeing him as a possible presidential candidate in 2028.
Likewise, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has earned the respect of many in the African-American community, even beyond his city, for how he has handled crime and racism directed at him.
And with reports that the Old Line State has seen a record decrease in violent crime, its stars should continue to shine despite those who want to remain in the darkness about their success.
According to his official government website, “Governor Wes Moore [on May 19] delivered remarks at the Center for American Progress IDEAS Conference in Washington, D.C., highlighting Maryland’s historic reductions in violent crime and the Moore-Miller Administration’s commitment to an all-of-the-above approach to public safety. Addressing national leaders and policy experts, the governor outlined how record investments in law enforcement, combined with robust initiatives to tackle the root causes of crime, are driving statewide homicides and non-fatal shootings to historic lows.”
Gov. Moore said, “We are providing what happens when you reject the false choice between supporting law enforcement and building stronger communities. Public safety does not care about politics; it is about results. By getting tough on crime and tough on the root causes of crime, we are delivering historic drops in violence and creating a model for the rest of America.”
The governor’s website reported, “Statewide homicides have decreased by more than 40%, placing the state on pace for its lowest homicide rate in more than 40 years. Non-fatal shootings have fallen by more than 50%, juvenile homicides are down 39% and robberies are on track for their lowest totals in decades. In Baltimore, homicides have plummeted by 58%–the lowest rate since the state began keeping records in 1975.”
For his work in “Charm City,” RegalMag.com awarded Mayor Scott its 2024 Regal King of the Year, an award given annually to an African-American man making a major difference in the community.
Despite his track record, Scott has been labeled a DEI mayor and an N-word by some of his White detractors.
Richard Francis of RegalMag.com wrote, “The fact that Scott cares about all Baltimore residents and does not play the race card when it comes to disasters or anything else pertaining to the ‘Charm City’ is a great reason to award him the 2024 Regal King of the Year Award.
“The award is often reserved for an African-American man who makes a positive difference in the Black community or the community that surrounds them.
“But in a world that is often so divided by race, it is great that some cities and communities have leaders who care less about race and more about the complete collective of people they serve.
“According to the official Baltimore website, ‘During his first term, Scott emerged as a leading voice in reducing violence in Baltimore and reinstated Council Oversight of the Baltimore Police Department by holding quarterly hearings. He believes that reducing violence will require a holistic, all-hands on deck approach, one that recognizes violence is fundamentally a public health issue. Scott led legislative initiatives that created extensive crime data sharing and online reporting of crimes by the Baltimore Police Department. In 2016, Scott introduced and passed legislation creating an open data policy in Baltimore.’
“Scott believes that Baltimore is experiencing a rebirth with shootings and murders decreasing.
“Baltimore’s first two-term mayor in 20 years added that he wants to continue focusing on reducing crime and fixing the city’s vacant home problem’…
“In Baltimore, homicides are down 24 percent and non-fatal shootings decreased by 34 percent.
“However, Scott wants to curb youth crime as statistics show carjackings and robberies committed by juveniles increasing.
“Another thing that is increasing is Scott’s profile and the respect and admiration so many have for him.
“Some might call him a DEI hire.
“Others might call him something far worse.
“Who cares?
“RegalMag.com calls him royalty and the 2024 Regal King of the Year.”
An artificial intelligence quote from Google when Moore’s chances at the White House are researched reads: “Maryland Governor Wes Moore is considered a rising star in the Democratic Party with strong long-term presidential, though he has explicitly denied plans to run for the White House in 2028. He is currently concentrating on his gubernatorial duties and his 2026 election.
“While national polls for 2028 potential contenders sometimes trail his name behind other Democratic figures like Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom, Moore maintains high visibility through prominent speaking engagements and media appearances. However, political analysts note that his chances rely heavily on successfully navigating Maryland’s structural budget deficits and his ability to counter the impact of federal administration policies under President Trump, which he and other state governors have publicly opposed.”
