It is hard to top an Academy Award-winning performance.

But with “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” that just might be what Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”) has done.

Whether he wins another golden statue or not, the Houston-based film represents eccentric and evil extremism, that capitalizes on an epic performance by the lead actor.

Losing a parent is hard at any age.

But losing a mother as a young person must make it even more difficult.

Unfortunately, that is what happens to Fathia, Qadir and their infant sister ZZ when their mother Khadija (Shakirah DeMesier) passes unexpectedly.

To make matters worse, Khadijah had practically done everything domestically by herself from raising the children, teaching them their Qur’an lessons and breastfeeding the baby.

ZZ will not eat formula, so surviving without a mother’s breastmilk creates a serious challenge to the suddenly single father Latif (Ali).

Even Ali’s relatives are upset at him for always being absent from the home because of his job.

And it is not even like his job is some high-profile important position that has him networking with the big wigs of life.

In fact, he does network and associate with one big wig named Mike.

However, the jobs that Mike hires Latif to do are extremely dangerous, violent and messy.

Although Latif’s Islamic community in Houston empathizes with his current situation, that does not mean that they approve of his job.

In fact, his Sheik (Giancarlo Esposito) even gets physically violent with Latif, warning him not to take on any more assignments from Mike.

But the problem with collecting dirty money from someone is that it is not always easy to walk away.

When someone knows you have done something diabolical and demonic, they often own you.

And to stay on the right side of justice, you often must acquiesce to their whims and their demands, no matter how badly you want to go legit.

Therefore, when Mike gives Latif the order to eliminate one of his nephew’s enemies, Latif can beat around the bush all he wants.

But he knows he ultimately must do what Mike wants, even if it puts his loved ones in the crosshairs.

Although raised in a strict Muslim household and community, Mike’s nephew has developed a love for the ladies.

And not the normal love for the ladies that makes many men players.

He has developed a love for the ladies that makes him want to pimp them out, profiting from them by producing porn with them as his stars.

His lucrative company has provided all the trappings in life, from a huge mansion to every luxury car one could imagine.

But when a Christian zealot finds out about the porn empire in Houston, he decides to speed up the nephew’s meeting with God and turn the sprawling mansion into a new megachurch.

In “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” Mike gives Latif the assignment of eliminating the Christian evangelist.

Unfortunately, Latif has two serious problems, in addition to other problems related to the passing of Khadijah.

He is running out of his late wife’s breastmilk, and he desperately needs to find a nursing woman to help him out before his infant daughter becomes gravely ill.

The breastmilk bank requires a doctor’s prescription, which might present a problem.

Another alternative is finding one of the lady porn stars to help him out of his predicament, seeing that one of them nursed his baby, while babysitting his two older children, without consent.

While porn star breastmilk might not be the ideal situation, God works in mysterious ways.

Unfortunately, the devil has some mysterious ways too.

And sometimes mysterious people who pretend to be religious leaders are often possessed by Satan.

And Christian extremists can sometimes be as extreme as Muslim extremists.

Unfortunately, the most violent worshipper of God might be the victorious one at the end of the day.

So, let the best, or most evil man, win.

Ali stands out in modern Black cinema by shattering stereotypes of who Black men truly are.

His characters in movies like “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” and “Moonlight” are strong fatherly figures and positive male role models, despite their glaring flaws.

Ali’s portrayals are human, which includes the good, the bad and the ugly.

While Latif is not all positive, especially considering his occupation, he is not all bad either.

In “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” Latif is forced into the role of single father.

And although he does not have everything under control like his late wife would, he will stop at nothing to protect and provide for his family, even if that means partaking in some activity that he wants to get away from.

Furthermore, “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” takes a realistic view of people’s relationship with God.

Although people of faith believe that God is good, that does not mean that they do not question his goodness sometimes.

Additionally, life’s trials and tribulations can make people of faith become mad at God at times, especially when they believe he called someone home too soon.

But “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” shines because it does not take a straightforward and simple approach in its depiction of life and all its travails.

“Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” is completely bizarre and peculiar, and that is also what separates it from Ali’s other standout performance in “Moonlight.”

Some moviegoers often complain ab0ut the Hollywood formula.

But there is nothing formulaic about Ali’s performance in “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.”
