Yes, Trump is Still Clear, Present Danger to American Democracy

(Todd A. Smith)

The late, great poet Maya Angelou once wisely stated that when a person shows you who they are the first time, believe them.

While many people might think that Democrats and some Republicans are alarmist trying to fan the divisive flames of American politics, Americans only must look to Jan. 6, 2021, and the lead up to that date to realize that former President Donald Trump has no respect for the United States Constitution or its beloved democracy.

Therefore, it is imperative that all true patriots get behind President Joe Biden because 2024, like 2020, will be one of the most consequential presidential elections of all time.

In sports, athletes are often taught to have a short memory so that they can quickly move on the next play, game or match.

If a wide receiver drops a wide-open pass in the end zone, a short memory will help them get back in the game so that they can catch the next pass from the quarterback.

In basketball, the most important shot is the next shot that the athlete takes.

Who cares if they missed the last 10 shots because the next shot might be the game winner.

Having short memories are great because people will quickly forget the negative and move confidently into the future.

However, short memories are not too beneficial for American politics these days.

Throughout Trump’s term in office from 2017-2021, many patriots were alarmed at his divisive behavior.

Many patriots could not believe how Trump tried to cozy up to brutal dictators.

And many patriots laughed when he desperately tried to steal the 2020 election from President Biden.

Unfortunately, many people have forgotten how dangerous and divisive his presidency truly was.

Therefore, many people are letting their guards down when it comes to a potential second Trump presidency.

Furthermore, the fact that Trump is no longer active on the most popular social media apps has probably given people the false belief that he has calmed down over the last four years and seen the errors of his ways.

Unfortunately, a person cannot get blood from a turnip and the former guy is more dangerous than ever.

His dangerous rhetoric has just been kept within the echo chamber of his MAGA cult and Truth Social app, which specializes in not telling the truth, especially when the posts are made by the former guy.

At a town hall hosted by Sean Hannity of Fox News, Trump recently joked that he would only be a dictator on the first day back in office when it comes to the border and drilling for oil.

But there is nothing funny about autocracy when it comes to the United States, a nation founded on freedom and liberty, not tyranny.

He has vowed to go after his political enemies if he wins a second term.

He has vowed to suspend the Constitution.

He has called for the execution of military leaders.

And his lies about a stolen election in 2020, led to the deaths of other Americans, while putting countless other lives in danger.

For those like me who obsess over journalism, Trump’s threats have not gone unnoticed.

But for those that do not watch the news every day or read about politics every day, the warnings from American patriots wanting desperately to save our democracy might seem a little silly.

For those nonbelievers, I suggest that you watch Trump’s criminal trials that will begin in the first quarter of 2024.

For those nonbelievers, I suggest that you go back and watch footage of the Jan. 6 Committee hearings that led to criminal charges against Trump for trying to overthrow a fair and legitimate election.

For those that say that they did better financially under Trump’s presidency, I warn you to never sell your soul for money or any other reason.

And voting for Trump is the equivalent of selling your soul if you consider yourself a patriot and proud American.

And to African-Americans thinking about voting for Trump, I ask what the heck are you thinking about?

How can you vote for a former president who is openly opposed to racial diversity?

Furthermore, how can you vote for someone that wants to get rid of the Constitution and the rights you enjoy because of America’s democracy?

I have seen some African-Americans question what has democracy done for African-Americans?

My question to them is what would a racist White dictator do for African-Americans?

Unfortunately, African-Americans only have to look back a few decades to see what happens when we do not have a democracy because segregation and racism took away many of our democratic rights like the right to vote, the right to have our voices heard, the right to live where we wanted to live, the right to go to whatever schools we wanted to attend and the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

A racist White dictator would only take us back to those days.

Thankfully, the First Amendment allowed our ancestors to protest those abuses.

But who’s to say that we will have our First Amendment rights if the former guy suspends the Constitutions like he says he will?

While Americans have a right to vote for whomever they choose in the 2024 presidential election, if those people vote for Trump, please never call yourself an American or patriot ever again because Trump is against everything that this country stands for.

And if his past unpatriotic actions are any indication, these warnings are not hyperbole.
