Former President Donald Trump has faced much legal scrutiny since losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden.
No matter what side of the political aisle a person stands on, the consensus to what happened on Aug. 8 in Palm Beach, Fla. always comes back to one word, unprecedent.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) executed a search warrant on Mar-a-Lago, the primary residence of former President Donald Trump.
Some believe the warrant centers on Trump allegedly stealing presidential and classified documents, which would violate the Presidential Records Act.
Others believe it also might have to do with the Jan. 6 investigation.
Regardless, many people had something to say about Aug. 8.
RegalMag.com scoured the web to see what politicians and those connected to politicians had to say via interviews, social media and press releases.
“My beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents.”—former President Donald Trump
“President Trump and his legal team have been cooperative with FBI and DOJ officials every step of the way. The FBI did conduct an unannounced raid and seized paper.”—Christina Bobb, Trump’s attorney.
“Attorney General (Merrick) Garland: preserve your documents and clear your calendar. I’ve seen enough. The Department of Justice has reached an intolerable state of weaponized politicization. When Republicans take back the House, we will conduct immediate oversight of this department, follow the facts, and leave no stone unturned.”—House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)
“Presidents have a solemn duty to protect America’s national security, and allegations that former President Trump put our national security at risk by mishandling classified information warrant the utmost scrutiny. Although details of today’s actions at Mar-a-Lago are still emerging, it is clear that the Department of Justice must fully investigate President Trump’s potentially grave mishandling of classified information.”—Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.)
“DEFUND THE FBI!”—Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.)
“This is what happens in third world countries. Not the United States…If they can do it to a former President, imagine what they can do to you.”—Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio)
“Launching such an investigation of a former President this close to an election is beyond problematic. We’re 100 days away from midterm elections. President Trump is likely going to run again in 2024. No one is above the law. The law must be above politics.”—Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.)
“We need answers NOW. The FBI must explain what they were doing today & why.”—Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.)
“After today’s raid on Mar a Lago what do you think the left plans to use those 87,000 new IRS agents for?”—Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.)
“The apparent political weaponization of DOJ/FBI is shameful. I served on Benghazi Com where we proved Hilliary (sic) possessed classified info. We didn’t raid her home.”—former Secretary State and ex-CIA Director Mike Pompeo
“Countless times we have examples of Democrats flouting the law and abusing power with no remorse. Democrats continually weaponize the bureaucracy against Republicans. The raid is outrageous. This abuse of power must stop and the only way to do that is to elect Republicans in November.”—Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.
“It’s time for us in the Florida Legislature to call an emergency legislative session & amend our laws regarding federal agencies. Sever all ties with the DOJ immediately. Any FBI agent conducting law enforcement functions outside the purview of our State should be arrested on site.”—Florida state Rep. Andrew Sabatini
“This is one of the darkest days in American history: the day our Government, originally created by the People, turned against us. This illegitimate, corrupt Regime hates America and has weaponized the entirety of the Federal Government to take down President Donald Trump. As Governor, I will fight these Tyrants with every fiber of my being. America—dark days lie ahead of us. May God protect us and save our Country.”—Kari Lake, Arizona Republican gubernatorial nominee.
“Yes, I recognize the legal challenge that application of this law to a president would garner (since qualifications are set in Constitution). But the idea that a candidate would have to litigate this during a campaign is in my view a ‘blockbuster in American politics.’”—Marc Elias, lawyer for Secretary Hillary Clinton during her 2016 presidential campaign
“We believe in the rule of law. That’s what our country is about. And no person is above the law. Not even the president of the United States. Not even a former president of the United States…It will be interesting to find out exactly what the warrant was, but…we can only speculate.”—House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)
“No former President of the United States has ever been subject to a raid of their personal residence in American history…After years where FBI agents were found to be acting on political motivation during our administration, the appearance of continued partisanship by the Justice Department must be addressed…Yesterday’s action undermines public confidence in our system of justice and Attorney General must give a full accounting to the American people as to why this action was taken and he must do so immediately.”—former Vice President Mike Pence
“Another escalation in the weaponization of federal agencies against the regime’s political opponents, while people like Hunter Biden get treated with kid gloves.”—Florida Governor Ron DeSantis
To Gov. DeSantis—“Your tweet is another escalation of your pathetic loyalty to an insurrectionist over country and the rule of law.”—Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried
“Ron DeSantis attacks law enforcement for legally raiding Mar-a-Lago while he’s yet to say anything about the heinous Nazis in our state who’ve been rallying in support of him.”—Rep. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.)
