Stereotypes are controversial, especially when it pertains to race.
But sometimes stereotypes can create a fun discussion especially when it pertains to Black fraternities.
The five Black fraternities (Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma and Iota Phi Theta) often boast about their image and their famous initiates.
However, the most famous African-American man in the country, President Barack Obama, does not currently belong to a Black fraternity.
I am pretty sure all five fraternities would love for the POTUS to become a part of their noble clan, but which one does his style fit?
The Alphas are stereotyped as the intellectuals, boasting such proud members as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Roland Martin.
The Kappas are stereotyped as the suave pretty boys and boast such famous members as Tavis Smiley and Colin Kaepernick.
The Omegas are known as the athletic Que-Dogs and boast members such as Rev. Jesse Jackson and Michael Jordan.
Unfortunately, the Sigmas are stereotyped as country. But those county boys can proudly claim Civil Rights activist Hosea Williams and Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith.
Iotas are stereotyped as the forgotten Black fraternity, but the Iotas can brag about such well-known and famous members as actor T.C. Carson from “Living Single.”
So if Obama became an honorary member of a Black fraternity, which one would fit his style and personality more?
It can happen because after all, President Bill Clinton is an honorary Sigma.
No one truly knows but the POTUS himself, but RegalMag.com thought it would be a lot of fun to see what the public thought of the 44th president becoming an honorary member of one of the prestigious and acclaimed Black fraternities.
“He would be an Alpha man, hands down,” said Sundra Proctor-Smith on MingleCity.com. “His wife is an honorary AKA (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority).”
Celena agreed and stated, “Not to mention his boy Hill Harper…is an Alpha man so I can’t imagine President Obama not following suit. And the Alpha hand sign is also a hand sign meaning…I’m not sure…in Hawaii.”
However Ace totally disagreed, stating that he believed Obama has the swagger of a Kappa.
“At first I thought probably Alpha or Kappa,” he said. “But I saw a clip of him on ‘Meet the Press’ that led me to believe he might be a Kappa. Somehow he just fits the Nupe style that I’m familiar with.”
A young lady who only identified herself as ALL SMILES agreed with Ace stating that Obama fit the Kappa stereotype more than other Black fraternities.
“I can see President Obama twirlin’ a kane,” she said. “He has that swag and that…ohhh so Kappa appeal.”
Nevertheless on MingleCity.com, a young man called Dipp stated that Obama looks like a Phi Beta Sigma man, while a responder called thatamazinque stated simply Omega Psi Phi.
Despite the fact that Obama might enhance the profile of any Black fraternity he might join, recent rumors had him considering Kappa Alpha Psi, according to KennethDPrice.com.
“More recently, rumblings of President Barack Obama considering honorary membership into Kappa Alpha Psi have stirred debate inside the organization…To-date, the fraternity only has a handful of honorary members…Obama would be the first such member in decades since the end of the fraternity’s honorary membership program.”
Regardless if Obama becomes an honorary member of a Black fraternity, and regardless of what stereotype fits his persona, all five Black fraternities would probably love for their stereotype to also include the term presidential.

That’s a nice article pertaining to what black Greek fraternity fits Obama. It’s obviously clear during his administration noticeably two congressmen ( Eli Cummings and John Lewis ) and Reverend Al.Sharpton were just about daily guests into the oval office. The President of Phi Beta Sigma was also observed occasionally in the White House. One only has to review the White house visitors log. Also the Men of Phi Beta Sigma have always been known as intellectual,not country. That attribute probably attracted President William Clinton into becoming a honorary Sigma man. I’d remember having a encounter with President Obama, upon seeing my fraternity pin, he came over and we briefly spoke. I was impressed how very knowledgeable he was about our history and spoke very highly of how Congressman John Lewis was instrumental in his life. We spoke about my hometown of NYC. We attend College there during the same time, but at different universities. I believe he will become a Sigma man within two years.
You have written a slanted piece of trash! “Sigmas are country.” We are an international fraternity! Are you a member of a fraternity?
Furthermore, you state it would be great if President Obama would join a historically African American fraternity (as a honorary member). In the same breath, you slight President Clinton as an honary member of Phi Beta Sigma. Did you not know the late: President Nelson Mandela, Dr. Huey P. Newton and Mayor Harold Washington were Men of Sigma?
