HBCU Basketball: Texas Southern Men Prevail; Ladies Struggle

Lady Tigers lose late to AAMU

By Uba Okereke

Texas Southern (TSU) was defeated by the Alabama A&M (AAMU) Lady Bulldogs 52-50 on a buzzer-beating shot by AAMU’s Whiquitta Tobar.

Both teams played a hotly contested first half that spilled over into the second half. The game contained nine ties and three lead changes. TSU finally managed to build a seven point lead with 15:31 to play in the second half. The Lady Bulldogs went on a quick scoring run to tie the game 35-35.

TSU sophomore Kyla Bennett scored off an offensive rebound to give the Lady Tigers a 42-39 lead with over nine minutes remaining. AAMU went on another scoring run within two minutes to tie the game for a seventh time at 44-44.

The Lady Tigers led 50-49 at the 1:28 mark until AAMU scored the final three points of the game, including the game-winning shot by Tobar.

Senior Gabrielle Rosiji ended the night with 14 points, nine rebounds, two assists and a block.  Jasmine Cannon had 10 points before drawing her fifth foul.

Tigers edge AAMU, 65-61

The Texas Southern men defeated Alabama A&M 65-61 to remain at the top of the SWAC standings. The Tigers won a close game over the Bulldogs despite numerous turnovers and poor free-throw shooting.

The game was a hard-fought battle from tip off. Texas Southern managed to keep AAMU at arm’s length with a 19-14 lead. Tigers led at halftime 34-30.  TSU shot 36 percent from the field and a subpar 53 percent from the free-throw line.

The second half told a different story for TSU. They built a modest 39-32 lead in the second half before the Bulldogs woke up offensively and answered with a 13-2 scoring run. Texas Southern answered right back with a 10-2 run of their own to retake the lead (51-49) with 6:19 remaining.

The game was intense over the next two minutes before TSU broke away for good. TSU held a 61-54 lead with about two minutes to play before hanging on for the four point victory.

“It was an ugly game for us tonight. I don’t mean to sound down but a victory is a victory I guess,” said head coach Tony Harvey.

Harrison led TSU in scoring with 18 points. Travele Jones recorded his second double-double of the season (15 points, 11 rebounds). Galloway and Johnson-Danner each had 11 points.
