Getting to Know Kamala Harris, the Second Black Woman Ever Elected to U.S. Senate



With all of the fear, controversy and shock that surrounded the election of Donald J. Trump as the 45th United States president, a historic feat might have gotten lost in the mix.


California elected Kamala Harris as the second Black woman (Carol Mosley Braun, 1993-1999) ever to serve on the U.S. Senate.


In honor of Harris’ historic election, RegalMag.com would like for readers to get to know Harris before she enters the hallowed halls of Congress with some fun facts.




  • Harris is 52 years young.

  • She graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C.

  • While at Howard, she majored in Political Science/Economics and competed on the debate team.

  • The senator-elect is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

  • Harris received her legal education at the University of California, Hastings College of Law.

  • According to NBCNews.com, “Harris’ platform includes such issues as criminal justice and immigration reform, creating good-paying jobs, enacting family leave and equal pay policies, college affordability and universal pre-kindergarten for children and tackling climate control.”

  • Harris was born in Oakland to an Indian mother and Jamaican father.

  • She began her professional career as a Deputy District Attorney in Alameda County, Calif.

  • She served as District Attorney in San Francisco and also served as the first woman and first person of color to serve the state as Attorney General.

  • The future senator has been married to attorney, Doug Emhoff since 2014.
